Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, a small town in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. He hailed from a humble background and came from a family of devout Muslims.

Kalam's father, Jainulabdeen, was a boat owner and imam of a local mosque, while his mother, Ashiamma, was a housewife. He had four siblings. Despite their modest means, Kalam's parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep sense of values.
